Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Context for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
